"Psalms of Joy"  for treble voice S.S.A.A.  a cappella choir (1997) - duration approx. 5:30 minutes

This is a setting of selected lyrics from the Biblical Psalms concentrating on the words "joy", "rejoicing" and "praise".  The composer's aim was to capture the bright colourful vocal quality of the treble voices as well as the descriptiveness and joyfulness of the lyrics.

A special feature of this composition is the vocal "bell-tolling" motif, which is sung to the word "joy".  This "joy" motif rings through the choir in the opening section,  and then later as an effective coda.

This a cappella choral work was composed by Rosalind Carlson especially for the Carlson Chorale to perform at the Third Australian Women's Music Festival in Sydney in 1997.  Sally Macarthur, Conference Co-ordinator, invited Rosalind to write a work for the Festival.  "Psalms of Joy", which was completed in June 1997 for this September Festival, was the result of that invitation.

World Premiere Performance:  28th September 1997 at St Scholastica's Convent Chapel - Glebe (Sydney, Australia).  This work was recorded on the CD "Arcadia" in 2000, performed by the Carlson Chorale.

Suitability: Highly recommended for a good quality Secondary School Girls' choir; for competition singing; for a female adult choir who likes a challenging work, and for Cathedral choirs.
