Instrumental Music - solo oboe or Cor Anglais

"Pastorale", for solo oboe or Cor Anglais - 2011 - duration 4:45 minutes

Composer's Analysis (2013):

"Pastorale" depicts scenes found in rural Australia.  This work is expressive and atmospheric.

Here motifs are suggestive of sounds heard and sights seen in nature.

It opens with a lilting 6/8 melody.  This evokes a tranquil mood of calm and peacefulness.

The composer is viewing the rolling hills in the Australian Outback.  These green pastures are dotted with merino lambs, sheep and cattle.

The contrasting lyrical episodes and subsequent colour and rhythmic changes are descriptive of the other features found in this picture.  These incorporate the movements and sounds of the bird life and other vibrant activities, seen and heard by the composer, in this pastoral vision.

The main opening theme returns throughout the work.  The structure is in rondo form.
