"Australian Bush Calls", for oboe and piano - 2011 - duration 4:30 minutes

In 2006 the "Australian Bush Calls" for alto saxophone and piano was commissioned by Sorina Zamfir for her daughter Alina who was in Year 11 at Barker College.

Then in 2011 Telena Routh in discussion, requested me to transcribe this work for oboe and piano.  The reason being she was planning to have this composition available for her HSC students to perform in their performance examinations.

The melodic and rhythmic bush call motifs in this music were inspired by sounds heard by me in the Arcadian bushland on my property.

These motifs or figures are to be found in the texture of both instruments.

The sonorous pianistic style of writing contrasts the interesting configurations of the oboe component.

Rosalind climaxes the work with an energetic central section announced by piano double octaves in fortissimo.

A brilliant dramatique cadenza for solo oboe marked "ad lib" acts as a coda to this fascinating musical work.
